Damn if I know. I’ve been in the process of converting a machine to Vista. What a nightmare.
I spent most of the weekend and today just trying to get it to behave as well as XP. I see No – ABSOLUTELY NO – reason to buy this thing. There are a couple of cool visual effects and it’s a little more intelligent in some processes, but that, in no way, makes up for the incredibly lame security implementations.
By the way, just in case you think the ol’ i/m is crashing a little ahead of schedule, I’m doing this as a learning experience. I have customers that use it and I need to have a working knowledge.

To me the backwards compatibility of this with some of my XP compatible programmes has been diabolical.
I think a lot of this is being resolved but its still been a major pain in the arse getting there.
Comment made on December 10th, 2007 at 3:41 pmI’ve worked on hundreds of Vista boxes and moved systems from XP to Vista I don’t know how many times. Compared to past issues of 98 to XP or even worse, any thing to do with ME, Vista is a dream.

Unfortuanate that you can’t seem to understand or appreciate the changes. The security implementation is sadly a sign of the times, people want security built into the OS but they also want to run things like downloaders and file sharers, and malicious morons are constantly writing stuff to exploit the software and ports people use, there simply isn’t an easy answer. I think Vista may be the best MS has done so far, previously 98SE was what I considered the best. Backward compatability was getting beyond a joke and bloating the OS out of preportion, MS was very clear that Vista was from a new code base and that XP apps wouldn’t neccessarily be supported, some complain about it, but you were told.
As for your title question, Why is Bill Gates rich?
Because he sees further into the future than most and despite the bitching about windows, no one has come up with anything better, yes, I’m talking to you Apple and Linux, keep trying and one day your systems will be as good as windows.

I dare say I’ve worked on more computers than you can possibly imagine.
Your understanding of the security issues is actually somewhat understated. We’re not talking about port blocking etc., but loss of basic network functionality due to a terribly lame implementation of security policy, rights and ownership. I was listening to Leo Laporte this weekend talking about the nightmare people are having doing simple networking between XP and Vista. Inexcusable! A quick Google search will show the thousands of people having similar frustrations and Microsoft is totally silent – acting like, as they always do, nothing is wrong.
My favorite write is John Dvorak. In a recent PC Magazine he wrote in and article titled “The Vista Death Watch”:
“…destined to be a disdained flop.”
and
“I’m certainly not going to be a happy camper if I have to switch to a Mac or Linux system full-time, yet that is exactly where this scatterbrained company seems to be sending me.”

I have spent 20 years developing software in MS operating systems. I also was an official (meaning I had an ID number, was required to report mach to MS, and received regular shipments of updated versions) beta tester for 95 and NT. I started using Vista with the PDC Alpha release. I recently purchased a PC (a tablet) with Vista installed on it by default. All I can say is that I am not happy. I understand the security implementation, but I believe that they could have done a better job with it. The problem there is probably backwards compatibility. Both Linux and Os X handle authorization better than Vista and MS could learn a lot from their implementations. The eye-candy features are interesting, but I feel that XP is a much more usable operating system.
